The Super Bowl isn’t just a game. For some its a huge social event, for others nearly a religion. No matter how you celebrate the culmination of the NFL season, it is absolutely a masterclass in leadership, teamwork, and execution.
While fans are glued to their screens, the real story unfolds behind the scenes, where coaches and players embody the very principles that make businesses thrive. Sports in general are fantastic crucibles to forge leaders - and whether you play at a championship level, recreationally, or even if you played when you were a kid, it will help you be a better leader.
“The Super Bowl is a little different than any other game. It’s the culmination of everything you’ve worked for. The pressure is always there, but the most important thing is to stay calm and focused.” - Joe Montana, 3 time Super Bowl MVP + 4 Time Super Bowl Champion
Here’s what we can learn from this championship event.
1. Leadership is About Adaptability
In the high-stakes world of the Super Bowl, things rarely go according to plan. A fumble, a missed pass, or an unexpected twist can change the momentum in an instant. What separates the great leaders from the good ones is their ability to adapt quickly and keep their teams focused on the bigger picture. In business, as in football, success isn’t determined by perfection—it’s about responding to challenges with a clear vision and keeping your team motivated, even when things aren’t going as expected. Things will go off the rails sometimes so how you respond mattes.
2. Trust the Process, but Be Ready to Pivot Championship teams don’t get there by relying solely on instinct. They’ve built a system, a process, that has been tested and refined over time. But no process is foolproof. Leaders who can recognize when to pivot and adjust the game plan are the ones who end up lifting the trophy. This translates to business: Trust the systems you’ve put in place, but never lose sight of the flexibility to make necessary changes as you face new challenges. I've spent a lifetime in hospitality, and every magical, memory making moment had a process behind it - and we were always ready to adapt when needed.

3. Teamwork is Everything The Super Bowl showcases the pinnacle of teamwork. Each player has a role, but no single individual can claim victory alone. Great leaders know that empowering their teams—and allowing them to play to their strengths—is how you win both in sports and in business. Leaders can't solve all the problems themselves, but they an foster a collaborative environment where everyone is aligned and open with sharing information and ideas.
4. Resilience Under Pressure Matters The Super Bowl is filled with moments of intense pressure. Yet, the teams who excel under these conditions are the ones that normally win (think about that last minute field goal for the win). Leaders must be able to manage stress and insulate their teams when needed from the pressures of the day. Whether it be customers, clients, the economy, or a corporate mothership, every business experiences pressures from within and from the outside. Great leaders find ways to move with evolving situations and bring their teams along as well.
5. Winning Starts with Culture The Super Bowl teaches us that culture is the foundation of success. The teams who consistently perform at the highest level have created a culture of excellence, accountability, and trust. Leadership is not just about winning games—it’s about creating an environment where a winning spirit is nurtured and enabled. In business, this means building a culture where your team has a voice, training is robust, tools are available, and teams are empowered to solve problems.
6. Communication is Key In high-pressure situations, clear, concise communication can make or break the game. Whether it’s a quarterback calling an audible or a coach making split-second decisions from the sidelines, great leaders communicate effectively at all times, not just when it is convenient. Your role as a leader is to foster a culture of transparent communication that ensures everyone is on the same page. This means those daily pre-shift huddles, regular touchpoints and one to ones, and regular feedback and coaching.
7. Activate Your Strategy Through Concrete Tactics The best teams don’t just show up and hope for the best—they have a strategy. It isn't enough for a great team to have "winning the Super Bowl" as a strategy, they must be ready to activate with the hard work and tactics it takes to activate that strategy through the season. Much is the same in your business. You may have a 12 month growth or customer experiences strategy, but it is made up of key moves and milestones that must be completed through determination and accountability.
Successful execution in the Super Bowl is about efficiency: in Super Bowl LV, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers scored on 50% of their drives—a great example of executing a game plan effectively.
The Super Bowl reminds us that there is no one "right" way to achieve success. While the core tenants of successful teams have much in common in sports and business, each journey will have a flavor all its own.
That said, the foundational elements of building a high performing team, creating a culture of communication + accountability, and crafting a blueprint for the future with key milestones that must be achieved are crucial to the overall success of your business.
And it always comes back to keeping people at the center of everything you do, because that is where the most amazing things are possible.
